These presets live in this browser only
They survive a refresh, but they do not follow you to another device and your teammates cannot see them. A free Revolink account stores three UTM templates on the server - unlimited on paid plans.

Shorten it with Revolink and you also get click counts, geography, device breakdown - and the UTMs survive the redirect.
Most channels are a spike: you post, traffic arrives, it fades within days. YouTube is the opposite - a video found through search two years later sends exactly the same kind of visitor, through a link nobody has looked at since.
Everything else sits behind the fold until someone expands the description. A link that survives in view has to be short, which means a long tagged URL is working against you before anyone even clicks it.
A video keeps earning views for years. The link in its description was written once, probably for a launch that ended long ago. Encoding a short link means you can repoint old videos at a current page instead of leaving them sending traffic to a dead one.
They reach people at different moments and convert differently. Same source and medium, different utm_content, and you can finally see whether the pinned comment is worth writing every time.
utm_medium=video separates YouTube from your social posts in default channel groupings. Filing it under social works, but then the channel report can no longer tell you what video specifically contributes.
Short-form video on other platforms tags differently - see TikTok or the full builder.
utm_source=youtube with utm_medium=video for organic placements - descriptions, pinned comments and cards. For paid placements bought through Google Ads, the medium is cpc, and the platform will usually tag the links automatically.
You can edit the description itself at any time. The real problem is doing it across a back catalogue of videos, one by one. That is the case for putting a short link there in the first place: change the destination once and every video that ever carried it now points somewhere current.
Put the video's identity in utm_content or utm_campaign - a slug of the title works well. Keep source and medium constant so everything still groups as YouTube traffic, and let the third field carry the per-video detail.
Sometimes, and not reliably enough to build reporting on. It varies by app, browser and whether the link opens in an in-app view. UTM parameters remove the dependency entirely - the attribution travels in the URL rather than in a header that may or may not arrive.
